Thinking Machines debuts Inkling, a giant open model it admits is not the best

Thinking Machines, founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, released Inkling, an open-weight multimodal language model under the Apache 2.0 license. Designed for low cost and censorship resistance, Inkling enables enterprises to run agentic AI workloads on-premises. Although not state-of-the-art, it demonstrates high performance in software engineering, scoring 77.6% on SWE-bench Verified, beating Nvidia Nemotron 3. The lab aims to keep weirdness alive while providing a customizable, enterprise-friendly tool for developers and companies.
