Building IWE's block-editing language for LLM writers revealed four key lessons: state the blast radius, make identity a constraint, fail toward recoverable mistakes, and treat error messages as primary documentation. Benchmarking IWE as memory for AI agents showed that rewriting full documents often leads to corruption, such as misplaced frontmatter. To solve this, the system focuses on precise edit operations rather than re-emitting entire documents, ensuring stability when curators maintain large markdown knowledge bases.
