Genetically Modified Pig Kidney Keeps Man Alive For Record Nine Months

Tim Andrews, a 66-year-old man with end-stage kidney disease caused by type 2 diabetes, received a genetically modified pig kidney at Massachusetts General Hospital. This procedure kept him off dialysis for a record nine months, marking the longest survival for such a transplant in a living person. It is the first time a pig organ successfully served as a bridge to a later human transplant, addressing the critical global shortage of human organs for patients in need.
