Federal court knocks down Trump’s order extending Michigan coal plant’s operations past retirement

A federal court has blocked a Trump administration order that sought to keep the J.H. Campbell Generating Plant in Michigan operational beyond its scheduled retirement. The 64-year-old coal plant was originally set to close in May 2025 to facilitate a transition toward cleaner energy. Energy Secretary Chris Wright had issued an emergency order to prevent the closure, but the court ruled that the Energy Department exceeded its legal authority by forcing the facility to remain open.
