Derek Phillips, a third-year University of Iowa student from Dubuque and member of the Hawkeye Marching Band, was taken off life support. Phillips suffered a sudden cardiac arrest at Kinnick Stadium during the season-opening football game against Northern Illinois. The collapse occurred shortly before the half-time performance amidst extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 94 degrees Fahrenheit in Iowa City. The University has not confirmed if the heat caused the incident, according to family updates on Instagram.
