Judge Excludes Key Confession in Sept. 11 Case

Air Force Lt. Col. Michael Schrama, the military judge at Guantanamo Bay, ruled that the 2007 confession of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to FBI agents was involuntary. Consequently, these statements are excluded from evidence in the long-delayed prosecution related to the 2001 terrorist attacks. While prosecutors argued that this confession was crucial evidence for the eventual death-penalty trial of the alleged 9/11 mastermind, the judge's decision prevents its use in the ongoing military commission proceedings.
