Judge signs off on Anthropic’s $1.5bn book piracy settlement, the biggest in US copyright history

A federal judge in San Francisco, Araceli Martínez-Olguín, has officially approved a $1.5 billion settlement between Anthropic and a group of authors. The plaintiffs accused the company of using pirated books to train its Claude models. This agreement, finalized on 20 July, represents the largest copyright recovery in United States history. The ruling closes the legal dispute regarding the unauthorized use of copyrighted literary works for the development of AI technology by the company.
