Vandal beheads Quantico Iwo Jima statue soldier with sledgehammer, causing over $100K in damage

Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, a 27-year-old man, was arrested Wednesday night for allegedly using a sledgehammer to destroy the Iwo Jima statue in Quantico, Virginia. The vandal decapitated one of the six servicemen in the 1954 monument, which honors Marines who died defending America since 1775. Police responded to the area near Richmond Highway and Fuller Road to investigate the destruction of property, which resulted in damages exceeding $100K to the historic sculpture.
