Don’t praise Meta ‘for what the court orders them to do’: Meta will only pay the full $17.1 billion settlement if TikTok and YouTube match it

Meta has agreed to a historic settlement regarding a federal lawsuit alleging it fueled a teen mental health crisis. While state attorneys general guaranteed $12.1 billion, Meta is withholding $5.3 billion of the total $17.1 billion settlement. Mark Zuckerberg will only pay the full amount if chief rivals TikTok and YouTube agree to implement the same safety changes to their apps. Meta is effectively challenging its competitors to match the settlement terms and safety requirements.
