France's Mistral unveils latest model in sovereign AI push

French startup Mistral has unveiled Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, its largest open-weight model. Trained on 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in European data centers, this 1-trillion-parameter model aims to rival top open systems from China. Designed for clients prioritizing data privacy over closed models from OpenAI or Anthropic, it is currently in preview for governments, cybersecurity teams, and developers. Mistral claims Le Chonk will rank among the top global open-weight models on aggregate benchmark performance.
