New York bans AI in primary school, three months after Norway did

New York City has implemented a one-year moratorium on generative AI for students from 2-K through eighth grade. This decision removes student-facing AI software and companion chatbots for approximately 600,000 children. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the ban for elementary and middle school classrooms on Wednesday. This move follows a similar ban in Norway's primary schools in June, while the EU AI Act focuses on regulating AI used on pupils rather than AI used by them.
