Rheece May, the habitat management and prescribed fire education coordinator at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, initiated a prescribed fire at the nine-Mile Prairie. This controlled burn was specifically conducted to eliminate dead plant material and remove unwanted woody species from the area. The operation serves as a critical component of habitat management strategies employed by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to maintain the ecological health and structure of the nine-Mile Prairie landscape.
