People cannot tell whether short stories are generated by AI

Research published by Cambridge University Press (CUP) indicates that individuals are increasingly unable to distinguish between human-written and artificial intelligence generated content. The study reveals that readers often give top billing to short stories produced by a chatbot, especially after being misinformed about the origin of the writing. This finding highlights a worrying trend regarding the human capacity to identify AI-generated text, suggesting that chatbot outputs are becoming indistinguishable from those created by people.
