Trump-Backed Black Conservative Lost A Congressional Primary To Opponent Who Dropped Out Of Race Last Month

Thomas J. Smith won the Republican primary for Michigan's eighth district despite suspending his campaign in July. Unofficial Associated Press results show Smith securing over 50% of the vote. He defeated anti-abortion activist Al Lemmo and Amir Hassan, a former federal law enforcement officer endorsed by Donald Trump. Although Smith had withdrawn from the race last month, his name remained on the ballot, leading to his victory over the Trump-backed favorite in the GOP contest.
