Democrat Paige Cognetti defeats Bresnahan, flipping key House seat

Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti flipped Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District, unseating freshman GOP Rep. Rob Bresnahan. The Associated Press called the race for Cognetti at 10:41 p.m., with 94% of ballots counted and Cognetti holding 55.2% of the vote. Running on an anti-corruption message, Cognetti defeated Bresnahan, who faced scrutiny over stock trading. This victory marks a key pickup for Democrats, who require flipping three GOP-held seats to gain control of the House of Representatives.
