Terror in the Amazon

On August 3, 2020, ten undercover military police officers from Amazonas arrived in Nova Olinda do Norte via three private boats. This operation targeted Indigenous people and riverine communities along the Abacaxis riverbanks. The deployment followed an incident ten days prior where a boat engaged in illegal fishing was shot at, resulting in a minor injury to a senior state official. Witnesses report that the official vowed to return to the area with force.
