The AI giants just broke with OpenAI and Anthropic on open weights

Nvidia and 24 other organizations, including Meta, Microsoft, and Mistral, signed an open letter titled Open Weights and American AI Leadership. The signatories, comprising chipmakers, cloud operators, and venture funds, urge Washington not to crack down on open-weight AI models as the government considers banning Chinese AI. Notably, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google were absent from the list. The coalition argues that maintaining open-weight accessibility is critical for sustaining the competitive edge of American AI development.
