New cat species identified for first time in 100 years

Scientists have formally identified the Leopardus tilcayo tiger cat in Bolivia, marking the first new living cat species recognized in over 100 years. This discovery was confirmed through the whole-genome sequencing of 38 individual cats. The identification of this specific species represents a significant milestone in feline research, providing the first addition to the known living cat species list in a century, based on genetic evidence gathered from the Bolivian population.
