Trump administration caps how long international students can stay in the US

The Trump administration finalized a rule limiting international students to a maximum four-year stay in the U.S., regardless of whether their studies continue. This policy, expected to start September 15, departs from long-standing practices where visas lasted the duration of an educational program, impacting Ph.D. students whose degrees typically take six years. Students wishing to remain longer must now apply for government approval. The Department of Homeland Security also intends to modify optional practical training regulations.
