Why were Waymo cars driving into active construction zones?

Waymo is recalling 3,871 vehicles after at least 13 instances of robotaxis driving into active highway construction zones. Seven of these incidents occurred on May 18 in the Bay Area. According to NHTSA filings, the software failed to recognize construction zones or prioritized avoiding other freeway hazards. This recall follows previous issues where vehicles drove into floodwater, gates, and telephone poles, highlighting ongoing challenges with the fleet's ability to navigate specific road hazards safely.
